Why does it Dump?
The core safety principle of an RPZ assembly is maintaining a hydraulic buffer. The pressure in the center chamber (Zone 2) must ALWAYS be lower than the supply pressure (Zone 1).
If Check Valve 1 (CV1) fails, high-pressure water bleeds into Zone 2. As the Differential Pressure (DP) drops towards 2.0 PSID, the heavy relief valve spring overcomes the hydraulic pressure holding it shut.
Result: The port opens, expelling the contaminated water and maintaining the physical air gap to protect the city water supply!
